Community Building Events
Community is more than a collection of buildings; it’s the people who live in the neighborhood and the social bonds among them. ONSLRG sponsors a range of events throughout the year to bring neighbors together and to cultivate those relationships that sustain community.
National Night Out Celebration
Every year neighbors and friends of Old North gather to enjoy some good grilled foods and a pot-luck of snacks, salads, and desserts in Wingmann Park and along Wright Street, all while showing support and appreciation for the police and fire department personnel who protect and serve the neighborhood.
Outdoor Movie Nights
Over the past few years, ONSL residents have enjoyed movies on the big-screen, under the stars, and around the corner or down the street on late summer or fall evenings. These family-friendly events provide an opportunity for residents to hang out with their neighbors while kicking back on picnic blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy free showings of relatively recent or classic feature films.
Check out Upcoming Events for the latest updates on the upcoming presentations.
Quality of Life Meetings
No community is perfect, and that includes Old North (although we’re getting there!). So, how do we keep the neighborhood moving closer and closer to the ideal community the residents know the neighborhood can become? Every other month or so, new and long-time neighbors, homeowners and renters come together to discuss ways they can work together to address common concerns. These meetings are open to all and also provide opportunities to bring issues to the attention of representatives from the 4th and 5th police districts and city agencies.
Check Upcoming Events for the date and location of the next Quality of Life meeting.
Annual House & Community Tour
One of the highest profile and best loved events of the year, the Old North House & Community Tour is much more than the name suggests. In fact, it’s more like a community-wide celebration of the revitalization in progress throughout the neighborhood. In addition to live music and free ice cream cones, visitors can catch glimpses of different approaches to historic rehabilitation at nearly a dozen homes, community gardens in bloom, and open doors at various neighborhood businesses and community institutions.
Check the House & Community Tour page for details on our 2013 Old North Home Grown Festival & House Tour, scheduled for Saturday, May 18.
An annual tradition and a favorite for residents who like to sample their neighbors’ home-cooked treats and enjoy the warmth of the community when it’s cold outside, ONSLRG’s first community meeting of the year is really a pot-luck supper with a little bit of a meeting attached. Usually held in late January or early February, the gathering provides an occasion for neighbors and friends to celebrate the achievements of the past year and a preview of plans for the new year. Watch for further details soon.
